The Adopt-A-Highway Program is a public/private partnership committed to cleaning and beautifying Missouri's roadsides.
The program is open to individuals, businesses, and groups interested in improving the environment. MoDOT provides signs, safety vests, caution flags, safety videos, brochures, litter bags and litter disposal. Volunteers sign a written agreement to pick up litter at least twice every six months.
Although MoDOT spends $6 million a year picking up litter, adopters’ work is worth more than $1.5 million a year.
"So many people think our Adopt-A-Highway program is just picking up trash,” said Roadside Supervisor Mark Aufdenberg. “We also offer beautification and mowing options as well. We would like to encourage communities to help us out by beautifying the right-of-way in their towns. Beautification improves every city and saves tax dollars of Missourians.”
