U.S. 169:  he Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that U.S. 169 Hwy. has been scheduled for a chip seal treatment beginning Friday, September 10, 2010 (weather permitting.)
MoDOT crews will begin applying haydite and oil on U.S. 169 Hwy., east of Union Star, beginning at the MO 31 junction and continue north to the town of Stanberry. The goal is to complete the chip seal in one week, weather permitting.
Flaggers will be present and a pilot car will be used to guide traffic. Any drivers on county roads or driveways in the portion of U.S. 169 Hwy. being chip sealed are asked to please be patient and wait for the pilot car.
Haydite is shale that is put through a kiln process. This process essentially puffs the material up and makes it more porous, without reducing its strength, thus making it a very good material to use on our roads. The porousness of the material allows it to absorb the oil and the strength of the material provides a hard, durable driving surface.
A CRS2P-Polymer oil is used as well. This type of oil stays revitalized, and essentially stretches, and will hopefully reduce the amount of cracking in our extreme weather conditions. The polymer oil is sprayed on the road surface at a pretty heavy thickness (a double tack coat) and then the haydite material is spread over the oil. The timing of this process is critical, and must be done within just a few minutes, or the oil loses its adhesive qualities. The haydite material is then rolled into the oil. The oil is quickly absorbed by the haydite; therefore, very little excess material is wasted when the broom is run over the road surface.
This process not only benefits the road, but also the motorists. The haydite is very lightweight compared to limestone, which is most commonly used with a chip seal. A concern when applying this type of treatment is the amount of property damage claims to vehicles. Haydite is very round, unlike limestone. Limestone has very sharp edges and can easily cause damage to windshields as cars cause the material to kick up when driving.

Construction Projects:

The road will be resurfaced with a three inch overlay and once the project is completed, the seven mile section will have two lanes, 12 feet wide with two foot shoulders.   During this project traffic on U.S. 136 Hwy. will be reduced to one lane. Motorists will be directed through the work zone by a pilot car. Motorists may experience delays of up to 15 minutes during this project and should allow extra time into their schedules for this traffic interruption. The work is expected to take four weeks to complete.

U.S. 136:  The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that Herzog Contracting Corporation of St. Joseph, Missouri will begin improvements to U.S. 136 from Route J in Nodaway County to the city of Stanberry in Gentry County beginning Monday, August 16, 2010 (weather permitting).  In May of this year, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded Herzog Contracting Corporation of St. Joseph, MO the contract for the U.S. 136 project for the total award amount of $2,379,155.48.

When completed, this 7.443 mile section of U.S. 136 wil have two-12' driving lanes and 2' paved shoulders on each side.
